"Peace will not come out of a clash of arms but out of justice lived and done by unarmed nations in the face of odds."
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly."
-- Martin Luther King, Jr. “Letter from the Birmingham Jail,” 1963.

| Season for Nonviolence 2007 Essay Contest
A printer friendly version of the contest rules are available online.
Gandhi and King, the inspirations for the Season for Non-Violence, are rightly famous for their views regarding the connection between peace and justice.
In 2006, a famous pop icon, Bono, the lead singer of U2, delivered in several different venues a speech about western attitudes toward the AIDS crisis in Africa. While the text of the speech differed from place to place – he gave it to the Labour Party Conference in England, the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. and, closer to home, at the Grand Rapids Economic Club in May of 2006.
Using an excerpt from Bono’s speech as your starting place, write an essay (suggested length: 2-4 pages, typed, double-spaced) on the topic of justice and peace. Are the two connected? If so, how? What can people who support non-violence do to move the world toward justice? Our nations? Our states? Our communities? Our families?
