March 26: Beethoven Dies

Stieler, Joseph Karl: Beethoven mit der Missa solemnis Ölgemälde, 1819On 26 March 1827, Ludwig van Beethoven, who is considered to be the greatest composer who ever lived, died. Beethoven began learning music at an early age from his father, Johann van Beethoven. His family originated from Brabant, Belgium. His mother, who was a very kind, warm hearted lady, was referred to by Beethoven as his “best friend”. Beethoven was one of seven children in his family but only he and his 2 brothers survived.

Beethoven gave his first public performance at the age of seven and nearly ten years later he made his first trip to Vienna which was the cultural capital of Europe. While in Vienna, he played the piano for Mozart, another one of the great music composers in history. Mozart told Beethoven that he would make noise in the world. In 1800, Beethoven organized a concert at Vienna that had included his first symphony. In 1801, he began to notice that he was slowly becoming deaf. However, this did not stop him from doing what he loved. In fact, he wrote some of his best music after becoming deaf.

People at first found Beethoven’s music to be strange and very extravagant. Today, his music is the most frequently recorded along with Bach’s and Mozart’s. Symphonies will still play similar music at concert halls across the world. While younger folk may not find Beethoven’s music to be very appealing to them, most people have probably heard his music while at the movies. Many films such as Die Hard, Ace Ventura Pet Detective, and George of the Jungle have used music composed by Beethoven.

Beethoven is also said to have had a very short temper. It would be interesting to hear what he would have to say if he listened to the music that is popular today.
