April 17: A Park for Everyone

Peak District National Park boundary markerOn 17 April 1951, Great Britain’s first national park was founded in what is known as the Peak District and is appropriately named Peak District National Park. This was the first of nine areas that would be dedicated as national parks by the end of the 1950s. Establishing the new part was a result of Parliament having passed the National Parks and Access to Countryside Act in 1949.

The park is run by the Peaks District National Park Authority and they wish to preserve the park for future generations and promote public use of the park. Another administrative organization that has control of the park is a committee that is made up of representatives from the local area and the Secretary of State for the Environment. It is the most visited of the national parks in Britain.

Peaks District National Park has unique scenery that includes limestone plateaus and moorlands. The park is split into areas called the white peak and the dark peak. The limestone plateaus and valleys lined with trees are in the white peak area and the moorlands and bogs are in the dark peak. The park is bowl shaped, which is from the receding of glaciers. There are two sections of the park called dark peak and white peak.

A current issue that the park faces is that of climate change. It is believed that there will be dryer summers and winters will be wetter. This means that because of this there will be changes in Peak District. The possible changes include more fires in the moorlands, possibility of flash flood in the winter causing damages to the surrounding area, and less water in streams during the summer. There is also a possible increase in plant and animal diseases that would not be killed off by frost. These changes affect the habitats of the wildlife that live there thus the entire ecosystem of the park will change over time.
