December 1: Assembly Line Begins in Highland Park

2013-12-01bOn 1 December 1913, Henry Ford installed the first moving assembly line to build the entire car. This plant was located in Highland Park, Michigan.

The Model T was introduced in 1908 and was built on the new assembly line for 2 hours and 30 minutes instead of 12 hours. Henry ford wanted to cut costs so that everyone would be able to afford his cars. The only way for him to cut costs was to find a way to build more efficiently. Model T customers could only buy the car in black. All the parts were interchangeable so that it would be assembled fast and organized. The chassis of the car was pulled down the 150-foot line by a chain conveyor and then 140 workers applied their assigned parts to the chassis. Other workers kept the parts stocked to reduce time away from their station.

Workers for the Model N put parts on the floor and at different areas of the plant to be put on in steps. Then workers were trained in one specific operation for each car part. The continuous flow of production lines in food packaging plants helped Henry Ford understand he could do this for the Model T. The Model T was then converted to an 84 step process. Machines were made to help the workers for harder tasks like lifts and chain conveyers.
