March 5: Smoking Tobacco Introduced in Europe

2014-03-05On 5 March 1558, smoking tobacco was introduced for the first time in Europe by Francisco Fernandes.

When Fernandes introduced tobacco to Europe it was believed to cure anything from chronic diseases to minor aches and pains. At first, there were many names for tobacco, including herba panacea, “our holy herb nicotian”, and Sana sancta Indorum, meaning divine tobacco. Francisco was the first person to introduce tobacco, but it was Jean Nicot who gained the fame when he was sent to deliver seeds to Catherine D de’ Medici, a queen who also claimed the plant had extraordinary healing powers for her headaches. The queen immortalized Nicot by proclaiming the new plant Nicotiana. This became known as Nicotine, the addictive drug in modern cigarettes.

In early times, smoking was primarily used as a medicine, but slowly became a fashionable pastime in early Europe, similar to modern day. Even though tobacco is still a very popular social drug, our understanding of the drug is incredibly different. Unlike the perception that tobacco is a healing medicine, smoking tobacco is related to many illnesses that prove deadly, such as cancer and heart disease. Smoking kills 440,000 Americans per year and is responsible for 1 out of every 5 deaths. What was once thought to be a cure-all drug is now one of the leading causes of death in the world, a daunting fact.
