March 25: Catholics Arrive in Maryland

2014-03-25bOn 25 March 1634, English colonists arrived at St. Clement, Maryland. They arrived under a charter granted on 20 June 20 1632 by Charles I to George Calvert. The charter yielded Calvert proprietary rights to all the land lying between the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay in exchange for a portion of the income derived from the land.

Before the charter was fully granted, George Calvert died. His heir and son, Cecilius Calvert, planned to establish Maryland as a safe haven for Catholics fleeing religious persecution. So on 22 November 1633, a selected group of Catholics and Protestants began their journey to Maryland.

Once Calvert’s group reached Maryland, there was uproar of religious conflict with the Puritan establishment. Although the House of Delegates passed the Maryland Act of Tolerance in 1649, the act was revoked once the Puritans seized control of the colony.

In the Puritan’s minds, they fled England to preserve their faith; a faith that found the protestant Anglican church to be too Popish. They wanted to create their own society that reformed human civilization through religion. The Puritan lifestyle was to be viewed as being exemplary. Therefore, if anyone saw a Puritan they would see God, and this would inspire them to seek God themselves.

In the end, the religion with the most followers conquered Maryland. In this case, the Puritans outnumbered the Catholics.
