April 11: Apollo 13 Launched

2014-04-11aOn 11 April 1970, the Apollo 13 craft was launched into space. The mission was manned by Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise. Apollo 13’s original mission was to land on the moon, but within two, there was a major accident. One of the craft’s oxygen tanks blew up taking two of the ship’s three fuel tanks with it. With the blast went the craft’s water, light and main source of electricity. It was then that Swigert said the infamous line, “Houston, we’ve had a problem.”

The oxygen was venting visibly into space, and the cabin’s pressure was dropping. The mission’s object was now to simply return alive, but this was becoming increasingly unlikely. The food that was originally meant to last the crew 45 days needed to now last 90, and it was also estimated that water would run out 151 hours before reentry. Besides these problems, the craft’s electricity was running short. If it ran out, there would be insufficient power to return home.

In the 1970s, the space race was throbbing at its peak. Space, the new and tantalizing “final frontier” had captured the imaginations and aspirations of people around the globe. New places to be found and new information to be learned spurred the world’s nations into a frantic dash of discovery, an event seen once before in history: The Age of Exploration.

Similar to the Space Race, the Spice Race of the 15th century was fueled by appetites for the unknown. Explorers aplenty set sail across seas such as the formidable Atlantic in search for exotic lands laden with spices and gold. These leaps of faith taken by these explorers were filled with danger: scurvy, starvation, shipwreck, and the prospect of being stranded in an unknown land or death at the hands of merciless aliens. Some, like the crew of Apollo 13, made it safely back home. Others did not. And like the Age of Exploration, the excitement and promise of new discovery of space sparked imagination and craving for knowledge of a new world.
