March 16: Rachel Corrie’s Tragedy

2014-03-16On 16 March 2003, 23 year old Rachel Corrie was killed by a bulldozer in Rafah. Rachel was killed trying to prevent a home demolition. She wanted to protect Samir Nasrallah’s house from becoming into ruins.

Palestinian pharmacist Dr. Samir lived with his wife and three children in the Gaza strip town of Rafah. Many structures were knocked down in that area. These people became homeless, because of all the home demolitions. Innocent children were on streets looking for food.

Rachel Corrie believed in peace and righteousness. Therefore she wanted to save this poor family from being torn apart one by one. When the bulldozer came to knock down Samir’s house, Rachel bravely stood in front protecting and refused to move. Standing bravely in front of the home, the Israeli soldier drove over her. Rachel died as a courageous person. She spent her life caring about everyone in need. Rachel died trying to save people. She is a person who is dearly missed. Rachel Corrie has a foundation in her name. The Foundation for Peace & Justice is run by Rachel’s loving parents.

Rachel was involved in the Pro-Palestinian group: International Solidarity Movement (ISM).International Solidarity Movement is still ongoing. The International Solidarity Movement (ISM) is a Palestinian-led movement committed to resisting the systematic unjust treatment and dispossession of the Palestinian population. They use non-violent, direct-action methods and principles to deal with issues. The purpose of ISM is to support and strengthen the Palestine popular resistance by being alongside the people during attacks, harassments, demonstrations, and during demolitions of homes. All volunteers have to agree on three guiding principles before participating. The three main principles are Palestinian-led in overall directive, non violence when it affects others, and always be consensus in decision making. They support full equality in everyone.

Currently the International Solidarity Movement is working on demonstrations against land confiscation. The members are focused on participating in non-violent demonstrations, disturbing activity by the Israeli occupation forces, living with or close by families whose homes are in danger of eviction, demolition or harassment.
