April 24: Boston News-Letter first published

2014-04-24On 24 April 1704, the first continuously printed newspaper in North America, called The Boston News-Letter, was first published.

The first editor of the News-Letter was a man named John Campbell. He filled the newly formed paper with plentiful news from London journals and news of European wars. The news paper covered much news about pirates during what is now known as “The Golden Age of Piracy”. Most of the paper’s information would come first hand from sailors delivering it to the coast of Boston.

Many would speak heavily of Blackbeard a very well known pirate of the time. News was even reported of his sensational death. Blackbeard was a very notorious pirate that operated his fleet mainly around the West Indies and off of the eastern coast of the American colonies. His gruesome black beard and intimidating appearance, paired with his disregard for reasoning and well being of others made him the post feared pirate of the time.

The Boston News-Letter was first to hear reports of his death in 1718. The newspaper dated Monday February 25 reported that Blackbeard was slain in gruesome hand to hand combat aboard his very own ship. This was huge news to everybody working the coasts knowing the well feared Blackbeard was no longer terrorizing their coast.

On March 17, 1776, the British army withdrew from the colonies due to the loss of the American Revolution. Because the newspaper’s owners were Loyalists, the British took all resources of the paper as well as all of the remaining writers and editors with them when they left Boston thus bringing an end to the Boston News-Letter for good.
