July 26: Black Bart Robs First Statecoach

2014-05-26On 26 July 1875, Black Bart robbed his very first stagecoach in Calaveras County in California. He spoke with unusual politeness saying “please” and “thank you.” On this robbery, he acquired a Wells Fargo strongbox containing $160. Later, when the stagecoach employees went to the bushes to look for the bandits that were helping Black Bart, he found that Bart had just carefully rigged sticks.

It takes a certain type of person to be a robber. It takes a different type of person to be a poet. For Charles Earl Bowles, he put the two together. He was known for leaving behind little poems at the places that he had robbed. He became a famous American West outlaw in the nineteenth century. Under his alias, Black Bart, was known for his gentlemanly style and sophistication. Throughout the 1870s and 1880s, he would operate around California and Oregon, taking as much as he could, but always being polite about it.

Out of the twenty-eight stagecoach robberies Black Bart committed, he only left two poems, but that was enough to get him noticed. And because he was terrified of horses, he never rode them and always went on foot everywhere. Known as the highwayman, he stayed true to his gentlemanly ways and never once fired a gun.

Being a gentleman never goes out of style. And although Black Bart was an outlaw, he wasn’t a bad man. He was a husband and a father and a true gentleman through and through. Black Bart is an important part of nineteenth American History and teaches everyone that anywhere, anytime, you can have class.
