July 1: Gettysburg

On 1 July 1863, what is said to be the most important engagement of the civil war began. This engagement was called the Battle Gettysburg and it lasted from July 1-3, 1863. This battle took place in Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania.

By the end of June of that year, confederate general Robert E. Lee decided to move about 60,000 troops into union territory because, up until this point, much of the war was fought in the south. Lee thought the moment was right to invade union soil. His plan was to destroy as many military posts as possible in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

On their way north, a fight breaks out in Gettysburg between two Calvary units. When Lee gets word of this, he gathers up his 60,000 troops and goes in. This decision turns out to be a very fatal one.

It was estimated that there were 3,155 union soldiers killed, 14,531 wounded, and 5,369 captured or missing. For the confederates, the numbers were a little bit higher 4,708 killed, 12,693 wounded, and 5,830 captured or missing. This was a lot for a three day battle.

Just four and a half months after the union army defeated the confederate army, Abraham Lincoln gave the Gettysburg address. It is one of the best-known speeches in American history and changed the way people lived. Coming in at just over two minutes, President Lincoln reiterated the reason of human equality that was stated in the Declaration of Independence and stated that the civil war was a struggle for the country and, with a new birth of freedom, would bring a lot of equality to all the citizens in our country.
