October 2: Amish Tragedy and Forgiveness

2014-10-02bOn 2 October 2006, 32 year old Charlie Roberts took ten Amish girls as hostages in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Five of those girls killed in a cold blooded murder. The others were severely wounded. Ultimately, Roberts ended his own life.

After the incident, Roberts’ family and wife wanted to move that very night out of the city. The story of the tragic shootout made national news as the Amish community sought Roberts’ family almost immediately that very same night of the shootout. Through their grief, they sought out the Roberts’ family and offered forgiveness towards the killer and his family. As a reporter commented, “Out of this horrifying school shooting comes one lesson in forgiveness”.

There are several books written on this incident. Some of them are Think No Evil written by Jonas Beiler and Shawn Smucker (2009), One Light Still Shining by Marie Monville, and Cindy Lambert (2013). There is also a movie called Amish Grace (2010) written by Sylvie White and Teena Booth. The movie was directed by Gregg Champion.
