October 26: Facing His Toughest Opponent

2014-10-26On October 26, 1968, George Forman would be facing his toughest opponent, Ionas Chepulis, in the boxing arena, in the finals for the Gold medal.

The opening ceremony of the 1968 Olympics were held in Mexico on October 14. A 19 year old named George Forman, a talented amateur boxer, entered the Olympic Stadium with the United States Olympics team. He had won the American amateur title prior to coming to Mexico.

At this point, he only had 18 fights in his career. Many did not expect him to go far. But thanks to the judge’s decision, George won his first fight at the Olympics. And after that, the fights that George participated in just got easier. Several of his fights ended by the second round. With these events, George was gaining a lot of attention and support, which he would need as he soon found out.

When George Forman faced Ionas Chepulis on October 26, the fight began like most others, but ended abruptly in the second round, when the referee stopped the contest and awarded Forman the gold medal. Forman had beaten Russian boxer Ionas Chepulis. At the end of this fight, where Forman showed determination to end this with a knockout, he held up an American Flag. Forman’s incredible performance at such a young age catapulted his professional career, and his dealings with Muhammad Ali.

After Forman returned from the Olympics his popularity skyrocketed which landed him one of the most memorable fights in his career. This boxing match was between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali, the fight was called The Rumble in the Jungle. It was called this because the fight was held in Zaire, Africa. This fight gained so much popularity that director Leon Gast made a movie about in 1996 called When We Were Kings (1996).
