Without belittling the pain and suffering Jesus went through, many people believe that Gibson over exaggerated the gore and torture in the movie, simply to alienate the Jews “responsible.” Many people of the Jewish faith feel that Gibson portrays the Jews as the ones who caused Jesus’s death, when in fact the Jewish leaders had no power to overrule the Roman death sentence. The decision was in fact made by the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, for Jesus’s insurrection against the Roman ruling power.

In years to come, The Passion of the Christ will still be viewed by Catholics all over the world. Although this is unavoidable, it is urgent that they know that the Pope ruled the Jews not responsible for the death of their savior, and to take this into account before jumping on Gibson’s bandwagon.
