October 17: Albert Einstein Moves to America

2014-10-17bOn 17 October 1933, one of the most famous physicists in the world moved to America from his birthplace in Nazi Germany. That man was Albert Einstein.

When Hitler became a German citizen in 1932, the German-Jewish scientist decided to stand up against the Nazi regime and left for the United States with his family and secretary in tow.

While offering political and religious freedom, America could not offer him protection from Nazi hatred. After Einstein’s fame grew, the Nazi regime did what they could to discount his theories and show him to be a fraud. There were also a growing number of death threats, eventually causing him to cut ties with any of his friends who were pacifists and adopt the mindset that fighting the Nazi regime with weapons was justified.

Though he faced many challenges, it did not stop him from becoming one of the world’s most famous and most revered scientific minds, winning multiple Nobel Prizes and speaking all over the world. And to think that this genius mind was almost silenced by a fascist regime fueled by racism and hate. It makes you wonder how many other Einsteins were silenced because of their race.
