October 7: Drusus Julius Caesar Born

2014-10-07On c. 7 October 13 BC, Drusus Julius Caesar was born. He was the son to the emperor Tiberius and the grandson to the first emperor of rome, Augustus Caesar. Drusus was born with the name Nero Claudius Drusus, after his uncle Drusus the Elder. He was given the title of Julius when he was adopted as the direct grandson to Augustus which put him into the line of becoming emperor. Drusus was only married once and it was to his paternal cousin Livilla.

Drusus gained support among Rome during his time as a commander because he suppressed an attempted mutiny among Pannonian legions from modern day Austria and Hungary after the death of Emperor Augustus. His other greatest command feat was when he beat back the German king of the Marcomanni so badly that the tribes didn’t dare attack the Romans for another 50 years. These activities earned Drusus respect among his family and he was given the title of Consul in Rome. During his time as consul, he was praised for withholding the laws of treason and keeping people in line.

He had earned the ironic nickname Castor for himself from the fighting with Sejanus. In Rome Castor is known as the patron god to the praetorian guards. He is also known to have been friends with the gourmand Appicus which his father didn’t like.

Drusus gained much respect as a commander and a politician but Drusus was known to have a temper. There was a long running feud between him and a praetorian named Sejanus since he had once been in a relationship with Livilla. After the death of the others in the line to become Emperor he became quite violent with Sejanus and struck him during a drunken rage. Fearing what Drusus would do if he became emperor Sejanus poisoned his wine and it went unnoticed. Since Drusus was dead the position of emperor was filled by Caligula after the death of Tiberius.
