November 22: Abraham Zapruder Films Assassination

2014-11-22On 22 November 1963, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy caused a nation to stop.

Abraham Zapruder captured the assignation on 26.6 seconds of film.

Abraham Zapruder was a Ukrainian dress maker living in Dallas, Texas. On the morning of November 22, he grabbed his 8mm Bell & Howell movie camera and headed out to film the presidential motorcade. Because his office was across the street from the Dallas Book Depository, he was able to find a four foot cement wall where he had a perfect position to film.

According to Joseph Janes, the relevance of this film is that “it must have the greatest ratio of eyeballs to frames of all time.” The Zapruder film that was kept in the National Archives was verified an original in 1996 by Roland Zavada, who was an expert in Kodachrome II film.

To this day, there are books written about the verification of the Zapruder film. In his book The Great Zapruder Film Hoax, James Fetzer criticized some of the tests that Zavada ran on the film as being “inconclusive or inaccurate, and offering a laundry list of different tests he ought to have performed.

The controversy surrounds frame number 313 from Zapruder’s film. This is the frame that shows the impact of a bullet as it hits the president’s head. Did it come from the front or did it come from the back? The Warren Commission findings were that “The President was struck a second time by a bullet which entered the right-rear portion of his head, causing a massive and fatal wound.”

Concerning the controversy, I think Zavada said it best when he said “The one significant truth of this movie is that the president was killed. Period.” I also wonder if the Zapruder film was actually the beginning of Reality TV?

I disagree, I think Zavada says it best in his technical analysis of the both the Z-film itself and the Zapruder camera itself.

He has also addressed the criticisms of his work by the “Alerationists” (Fetzer et al), and completely destroys their amateur and spurious assertions.

As a professional special effects artist for film myself, having read the Alerationist arguments, I find them utterly without merit.
