February 26: Mass Graves Discovered

2015-02-26bOn 26 February 1968, mass graves were discovered in Hue, Vietnam.

Go back to the morning of 31 January, almost a month earlier. Nearly everyone in the city of Hue had gone to bed only hours earlier due to the eagerness for the festivities of the lunar New Year holiday called Tet to come. War was the last thing on their minds.

The North Vietnamese and Viet Cong used this to their advantage and launched the Tet Offensive. Their plan was to bring about rebellion among the South Vietnamese population and encourage the United States to withdraw its support. They attacked more than 100 cities in South Vietnam.

This attack led to a death toll of 2,800 to 6,000 civilians and prisoners of war. The Viet Cong didn’t exercise caution; they just killed many helpless victims. The offensive lasted 25 long days ending on 24 February 1968. Soldiers from the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) dragged down the Viet Cong banner that had flown from the Citadel flag and raised the South Vietnamese flag.

In the months after the massacre, eighteen mass graves were discovered where victims were found bound, tortured, and sometimes buried alive.

The earliest known mass grave dates back to about 5000 BCE called the Talheim Death Pit. It was discovered in 1983 in a Linear Pottery Culture settlement or Linearbandkeramik. The pit contained remains of 34 bodies and points to what may have been one of the first signs of organized violence in Early Neolithic Europe.
