January 27: First Nuclear Bomb Testing in America

2015-01-27On 27 January 1951, the first nuclear bomb was detonated by the United States of America at the Nevada Test Site.

During World War II, the United States government spent millions of dollars on what was known as the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was a secret program to explore the isolation of radioactive isotopes in order to produce an atomic bomb. After World War II, the United States continued experimentation with the atomic bomb.

In December 1950, the Atomic Energy Commission assigned a giant area 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas strictly for nuclear testing. In January 1951, the first bomb was exploded on the site.

For the next six years, the US government would keep testing at the Nevada Test Site. The testing stopped after studies done on people that were stationed 2500 – 3000 yards away from ground zero found that there were extreme levels of radioactivity in that area. This was not dangerous and very unhealthy.

After learning the dangers of atmospheric testing, the government ordered tests to be conducted underground. Shortly after, testing was halted.
