April 25: The United States Declares War on Spain

2015-04-25bOn April 25, 1898 the United States officially declared war on Spain.

Spanish control over southern portions of the Americas would become discomforting to the United States and its citizens. Concerns over the expansion of the Spanish government and its mistreatment amongst the people and resources residing in territories such as Cuba would become part of America’s reason to act.

The reported Spanish attack on Havana harbor in February, resulting in the destruction of the USS Maine, increased tensions. Newspaper articles that proclaimed “Remember the Maine” increased public support for war which lead to the popular vote taken by the United States Congress on April 25.

The Spanish-American War was fought over the span of several months and finally came to an end on 10 December 1898 when the Spanish and United States governments signed the Treaty of Paris. The effect of the United States’ victory over the Spanish empire would create an independent Cuba, along with providing the US ownership of Puerto Rico and Guam. Furthermore, other territories such as the Philippines became free from Spanish rule.

The Spanish-American War has also become subject of numerous films. The Rough Riders was an American silent film released in 1927 focusing on Theodore Roosevelt’s mission during the war. Other films include A Message to Garcia (1936), and Baler (2008), an historical romance film which won several awards.
