February 23: Schindler’s List Shown on Television

Schindler's ListOn 23 February 1997, NBC televised the first TV-M rating to appear on Network Television.

With great criticism, NBC aired a mostly uncut and uninterrupted version of Stephen Spielberg’s Academy Award winning film Schindler’s List (1993) during prime time. Including all of it’s realistic graphic violence, this social historic piece was shown to a national audience of over 65 Million Viewers. This showing introduced the film to a larger audience and taught the American people about the history and horror of World War II.

On 23 February 1941, the element plutonium was produced and isolated by Dr. Glenn T Seaborg. At the time Dr. Seaborg did not know that this element was instrumental in the creation of nuclear power and nuclear weaponry. Though Schindler’s List showed the Nazi regime was cruel and heinous, the concentration camps were not the only atrocities committed in World War II. Dr. Seabor’s element would lead to great destruction and bring an end to the war.

The most deadly weapon used in history, the atomic bomb was used during the final days of the war. Through the use of a plutonium-core, the United States created one of the first nuclear weapons which it dropped on Hiroshima Japan on 6 August 1945. Over 80,000 people were killed in the blast alone.
