On 3 September 1812, a pioneer settlement in the southern Indiana Territory was attacked by Shawnee Native Americans. During this attack, 24 pioneers including 15 children were murdered and mutilated. Two of these children were kidnapped and four Indians were killed.

The first target of the 12-14 Indians was Elias Payne’s cabin which held his wife and seven children who were all killed and scalped. Later on, Payne’s body was found dead with his brother-in-law, Isaac Coffman.

During the attacks, many villagers tried to escape to Zebulon Collings’s family blockhouse. During this charge for safety, Henry Collings was killed with his pregnant wife who stabbed to death and scalped. When John Biggs’s wife heard an approaching Indian party coming towards her house, she fled with her three children to hide in a thicket of dense shrubbery and small trees. When the Indians saw indications of recent evacuation, they burned her house down and began searching for them. The youngest child started to whimper so Mrs.Biggs stuffed her shawl in child’s mouth. When the Indians left, her infant child died from suffocation.

As other villagers spread the word, many assembled at the Zubulon Colling’s blockhouse for protection. When the militiamen arrived, the Indian raid had already left. But the militiamen tracked these Indians all the way down to the Muscatatuck River where the Indians escaped.

A lot of contemporary reports say the leader of the Indian attack was a man named Missilemotaw who was later captured and admitted to leading the attack. This was the first Indian attack during the War of 1812, and to this day the victims of the Pigeon Roost Massacre are still remembered at the Pigeon Roose State Historic Site located between Scottsburg and Henryville, Indiana.
