On 14 October 1943, nearly 300 Jewish prisoners escaped after an uprising at the Sobibor Extermination Camp in Poland.

In 1943, the Holocaust in Poland was in one of the deadliest stages. Part of the secretive Nazi operation known as Operation Reinhard, the Solibor camp was responsible for nearly 250,000 murders. This camp was located near the present day border of Poland and the Ukraine, but in 1943, it was in the center of Nazi occupied Poland. The camp primary held Jews from Poland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, and the Soviet Union, along with Soviet war prisoners. Victims were forced to the camp by train where they were then taken to large gas chambers or put to work.

With rumors of the camp being shut down, which would result in every prisoner being shot point blank, the prisoners began to organize an underground committee to attempt to escape from the extermination camp. With help from newly arrived Soviet war prisoners, the escape date was set.

When October 14 arrived, the underground committee began their escape, killing eleven German SS officers along with various camp guards, as the killings were discovered by other officers, the inmates began running for their lives. Of the 600 escapees, only 300 made it to the nearby forest, and only 50 survived the war. Search squads found many and landmines surrounding the camp killed others.

After the uprising, the camp was dismantled and replaced by numerous pine trees. The gas chambers were destroyed and covered in asphalt; only recently to be discovered in 2014. The camp today is seen as a memorial with a pyramid of sand mixed with human ashes covering the once hell on earth.
