2015-10-30bOn 30 October 1972, at around 7:25 am, a collision between two commuter trains in Chicago, Illinois killed 45 and injured 332.

The first Northbound Illinois Central train overshot the street station. The engineer stopped the train and began backing up. Not far behind the second train was moving down the tracks at about 40 mph. When the first train passed the station, it had tripped a block signal; the signal that meant that the track was clear.

Coming through a heavy fog, the engineer of the second train saw the first train too late and slammed right in the back of the first train. The 1972 accident was the deadliest train wreck in the city’s history.
