October 23: Prohibition Laws Defied

The crew of the Linwood set the ship on fire to destroy the illegal alcohol it was transporting.

On 23 October 1921, the prohibition laws were being defied throughout the United States because of the large quantity of alcohol that was imported from countries such as the Bahamas. The “rum runners” had newer, faster, motorboats that ran rings around the US until the government provided similar boats to catch the smugglers.

While the government employed prohibition agents to prevent booze from being smuggled into the country, there were people trying to make a living off the illegal alcohol. From the constant seizure of alcohol preventing it from being available, business owners started making moonshine in their bathtubs and selling it in places they’d call Speakeasies. These Speakeasies simply adopted their name from bartenders telling their customers to remain quiet and “speak easy” so that they could order alcohol without raising suspicion.

The moonshine or “hooch” that was being made would a lot of times make drinkers of the illegal substance sick. Many of the people who consumed this hooch would still continue to drink it though because they could not afford the good stuff that was being sold by mob organizations. Chicago’s Al Capone was considered to be a glamorous figure for his large profit in bootlegging and half of the city’s police being on his payroll.

Unfortunately for the Speakeasy owners not being as rich and savvy as Al Capone, would often be raided by officers and either get arrested along with their patrons or have pay a hefty bribe. For the officers, the government provided a wage of $145 a month to confiscate illegal booze. This was a pressing issue for them because officers would commonly receive bribes of $100,000 from rum runners to look the other way.

Today the alcohol industry makes about $90 billion annually. In prohibition the government obviously wasn’t making anything off of alcohol because it wasn’t allowed to be sold. Nowadays, the government makes about $5.6 billion a year from the taxes they put with any alcoholic beverage.
