On 11 October 1776, during the American Revolution, the United States Navy engaged in what is known today as its first real naval battle known as the Battle of Valcour Island.

Fifteen gunboats under the command of American Brigadier General Benedict Arnold intercepted and attempted to destroy a British fleet of warships under the command of Sir Guy Carleton on Lake Champlain, New York. The small and inexperienced American Navy consisted of little more than cargo frigates turned gunboats and stood little chance against the British who had the most dominate Naval force in the world.

The objective of the Patriot ships was to eliminate, or to at least impede, the Royal British Navy as they sailed south to attack Long Island, New York. Although nearly all of the Patriot’s ships were destroyed, it still took more than two days to subdue the Americans. This bought General George Washington and his ground forces valuable time to prepare a defense of New York.
