On 4 October 1895, the first United States Open Golf Championship—more commonly known as the U.S. Open—was conducted by the United States Golf Association. It was held at the nine-hole course called the Newport Golf and Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island. The Open Golf Championship was originally scheduled to happen in September, but due to a scheduling conflict with the American Club yacht races, the Championship was postponed to October 4.
