Tombstone, Arizona, 1881

On 26 October 1881, The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral occurred. The gunfight lasted all of 30-seconds but today it is a very well known incident and is regarded as one of the most famous gunfights in the history of the American Wild West.

The gunfight took place in Tombstone, Arizona Territory. The incident was between outlaw cowboys and lawmen and was a result of a long time feud between cowboys Billy Claiborne, Billy and Ike Clanton, and Tom and Frank McLaury against the lawmen Virgil Morgan, Wyatt Earp, and Doc Holliday. Three men were killed during the gunfight; Billy Clanton and both of the McLaury brothers were killed. Ike and Billy Claiborne ran from the fight and both were unharmed. Virgil Morgan and Doc Holliday were wounded. Wyatt Earp was unharmed as well.

The gunfight wasn’t the end of the conflict though. On 28 December 1881, Virgil Earp was attacked by outlaw cowboys who attempted to kill him. Then on 18 March 1882, Morgan Earp was shot and killed.

Although the incident is named after the O.K. Corral, the gunfight didn’t take place in or next to the building. It took place in a lot next to Fly’s Photographic Studio which was six doors down from the entrance of the O.K. Corral. Around the time of the shoot out, the O.K. Corral was a livery and horse corral.
