Official opening of League of Nations, 15 November 1920

On 15 November 1920, the League of Nations was formed as an International Group located in Geneva, Switzerland. The League was created after World War I to set a forum of rules and regulations for resolving International conflicts and disagreements within a set of humane rules.

The idea for the League of Nations was brought up by United States President Woodrow Wilson as part of his fourteen points for world peace. Ironically, the United States never became a member of the League of Nations.

Its main goal was to prevent wars by restricting certain armaments from countries and setting international conflicts through negotiation and persuasion. Some other points that it addressed were work conditions, the sale of humans, treatment of native inhabitants, the selling of illegal weapons, POWs, and fair protection for minorities. The philosophy that stood behind the League of Nations stated from the 100 or so years before it. The problem with the League of Nations was that it didn’t have its own armed forces and had to rely on the great powers of Europe to fight for the regulations that it placed.

Japan, Italy, Spain, and Germany withdrew from the League of Nations at the beginning of World War II. Ultimately, it failed to stop another World War.

Twenty six years after it began, the League of Nations transformed into the United Nations on 20 April 20 1946.
