November 25: The Coringa Cyclone

2015-11-25bOn 25 November 1839, the Coringa Cyclone took place. This storm took place in Coringa, India, which is a small village near the Godavari River on the southeastern coast.

Coringa, India was brutally slammed by an absolutely horrifying, destructive cyclone which destroyed the port with immensely strong winds and a forty-foot storm surge. Sadly, 300,000 people were killed by this storm. This storm is said to have caused the third largest amounts of deaths worldwide by a tropical cyclone.

The amazing thing that came out of this storm was that the people of Coringa came together as a community, to prepare themselves for the future. For example, they considered where to build homes. Instead of building right on the coast, homes were rebuilt further inland. Taking these types of things into consideration allowed people to have a better chance of survival.
