Julius Streicher at Nuremberg.

On 20 November 1945, a series of trials of accused Nazi war criminals began. The trails were conduced by a United States, French, and Soviet military tribunal based in Nuremberg, Germany. Twenty-four former Nazi officials were tried at the Nuremberg Trials. When it was all over, one year later, half would be sentenced to death by hanging. The other penalties ranged from 10 years to life in prison. The Nuremberg Trials proved themselves to be innovating but were highly criticized and notably held to be victor’s justice.

As Julius Streicher was being led to his death, he shouted out “Purimfest – Purim festival.” The Nazi editor of the anti-Semitic Das Strumer newspaper, Streicher amazingly made a connection with an ancient story about the first attempt in Jewish history, the story of Haman, which was to destroy the entire Jewish people.

Hitler attempted to annihilate the Jews in Europe just like Haman plotted to annihilate the Jews in Persia. The story of Purim is told in the book of Esther. Because Mordecai refused to bow down to Haman, Haman then plotted to destroy the Jewish people. Queen Esther exposed Haman to the King and he was hanged on the gallows he had erected for Mordecai.
