On 31 December 1879, Thomas Alva Edison gave the first demonstration of his incandescent light bulb to the public at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. Edison was an American inventor who, during his life, invented such things as the phonograph, electric power distribution, the movie camera, and the first incandescent light bulb for commercial use.

The first incandescent light bulb was originally invented by Humphry Davy by passing current through a platinum strip. However, the light only lasted a short time.

In 1878, Edison used the term filament to the glowing wire carrying the current, although English inventor Joseph Swan used the term before him. By 1879, Edison had made a high resistance lamp in a very high vacuum which would burn for hundreds of hours. Although the inventors before him had produced electric lighting in laboratories, Edison focused on commercial application and was able to sell them to homes and businesses.
