On 15 March 44 BC, the mighty Julius Caesar, also known as “Dictator for Life,” was assassinated in the Theatre of Pompey. The conspirators against Caesar claimed to have never openly meet in hopes to maintain secrecy.

There were many suggestions on how to assassinate the powerful ruler. Some conspirators wanted to assassinate Caesar while he walked along his favorite walking area, the Sacred Way. Another plan was to assassinate Caesar during the elections where the conspirators would have been able to push Caesar over the bridge he must walk in order to appoint the magistrates in the Campus Martius. A third plan was to kill Caesar at the upcoming gladiator event because conspirators would be able to carry weapons without arousing suspicion. These plans were carefully thought out but the plan that was actually took into action was to kill Caesar where he sits at the senate because only senators were allowed to enter and the conspirators could hide daggers underneath their togas.

Although the conspirators were secret about their plans, many of Caesar’s friends claimed to have heard rumors about the assassination attempts. It is also known that Caesar’s wife, Calpurnia, claimed to have seen visions in her dreams. Caesar was concerned after hearing all of these stories until his protégé Brutus convinced Caesar to ignore these rumors and his wife because she is just a woman.
