On 4 January 1762, Great Britain declared war on Spain. Prior to this, Spain had remained neutral in the war between the two power houses Great Britain and France. Everything changed when Ferdinand VI died in 1759 and was succeeded by his younger brother Charles III.

Ferdinand VI had been the reason why Spain had not joined the war because he didn’t think he needed to put his nation in danger. But after his more ambitious younger brother Charles III took over the thrown, he wanted to secure Spain’s spot as a colonial power. So when he realized France was losing the war, he signed the Family Compact. Both France and Spain where ruled by branches of the Bourbon family.

Spain and France made a plan immediately after to attack Portugal. Portugal was not currently involved in the war but was an important economical ally of Great Britain. The goal was to divert the attention of the troops that were attacking France so they would have to go help Portugal. Because of this, Britain attacked a Spanish fleet in the Caribbean and took control of most of it. Although the plan to attack Portugal was a success, it had little effect on the outcome of the war since both France and Spain were defeated.
