September 10: Vox Dei–The Voice of God

On 10 September 1946, Sr. Theresa Bojaxhiu was traveling by train to Darjeeling, India when she heard the voice of God telling her “to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them.” Sr. Theresa followed the directions she had been given to her and eventually founded the Missionaries of Charity, an order of Catholic Nuns. Sometimes called the saint of the gutters, Sr. Theresa is better known to the world as Mother Theresa.

From her humble beginnings as one nun working to help the poor in Calcutta, Mother Theresa would eventually gain world fame, win the Nobel Peace Prize, and see her Missionaries of Charity grow to help the poor, orphans, leapers, the dying, and people with AIDS in over 100 countries.

After a miracle was attributed to Mother Theresa, she was beatified on 19 October 2003. This means that she can now be referred to as the Blessed Mother Theresa. If one more miracle is attributed to her, the Blessed Mother Theresa could be canonized. If canonization takes place, the “saint of the gutters” would become a saint of the Roman Catholic Church.

Since antiquity, the voice of God has inspired many people from a variety of faith traditions. In the late 1960s, an Argentinean rock bank adopted Vox Dei (The Voice of God) as its name. In 1971, Vox Dei released their second album La Biblia, Argentina’s first concept album. The first track on La Biblia is “Genesis.”

It is not known if Mother Theresa was aware of Argentine’s Vox Dei. However, the Argentinean Archdiocese did recommend La Biblia to Catholic youth.

    While Mother Teresa was one of the most caring, selfless and amazing individuals of our time, it should be noted that some controversy exists surrounding her beatification. According to David Orr’s article on The Telegraph, Dr. Ranjan Kumar Mustafi, of Balurghat Hospital in West Bengal, said “[the woman who was ‘cured’ by the miracle] had a medium-sized tumour in her lower abdomen caused by tuberculosis. The drugs she was given eventually reduced the cystic mass and it disappeared after a year’s treatment.” However, Monica Besra (the woman whom the miracle affected) and her family truly believe that a miracle removed the tumor. Regardless, evidence pertaining to either side is almost impossible to gather, so it truly leaves one wondering whether miracles really do happen today,

    Mother Theresa was raised by her mother who was a very holly woman. She tried to teach her children to love God and love the neighbor. Mother Theresa mentioned in an interview in Ireland that the first dying person she helped was a woman she found in laying in the street eaten up by rats. She took the woman to the near hospital but they didn’t want her there. Mother Theresa with her insisting attitude finally convinced the hospital to take her in. Mother Theresa did not want anything else but a place to put the dying people in and she would take care of the rest herself. She was very dedicated to everything she did for the dying people. Many young girls from high, middle and ordinary class helped Mother Theresa help the dying people that they would take off the streets. The way Mother Theresa explains the definition of poverty is there is one definition that means they are hungry for food but there is also another kind of poverty and it is hunger for love. That is the poverty the people Mother Theresa was helping had. They were lonely and did not feel love from anyone around them. Mother Theresa was truly an inspiring woman and the change she had in the world even if it was one person at a time I feel had a huge impact in the world.
