September 27: E=mc2

On 27 September 1905, Annalen der Physik published Albert Einstein’s “Does the Inertia of a Body Depend upon Its Energy Content?” in which he proposed that E=mc2.

Einstein was a theoretical physicist who was born in Germany on 14 March 1879. The year that Annalen der Physik published his paper on relativity, Einstein published three other important papers and also received his doctorate. In 1921, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect.”

Einstein was visiting the United States when Hitler came to power in 1933. He decided not to return to Germany and took a position as Professor of Theoretical Physics at Princeton; a position he held until 1945. He became and American citizen in 1940.

After the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Einstein was one of many in the scientific community to call for a world government to control atomic energy and to insure peace; a position he took as early as 1946. As he wrote in “Toward a World Government” which appeared in his Out Of My Later Years: the Scientist, Philosopher and Man Portrayed Through His Own Words, “A world government must be created which is able to solve conflicts between nations by judicial decision. This government must be based on a clear-cut constitution which is approved by the governments and nations and which gives it the sole disposition of offensive weapons.”

Although he had helped create the atomic bomb, Einstein advocated for the dismantling of all nuclear weapons. Just before his death, he stated that one of the great mistakes he had made was in signing a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt advocating for the development of nuclear weapons. However, he argued that there was some justification for their development because Germany could have developed them.

When Einstein was once asked what types of weapons would be used in World War III, he responded, “I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”

Albert is no doubt one of the smartest people ever and i didnt know much about him but seemed to find him very intresting and so i looked him up. Einsteins father who i found interesting and sort of a role model to albert, Herman Einstein who was an electical engineer was very well known in munich for winning the contract that provided DC litghts to light up octoberfest in 1885. Herman was part of the Einsteins electrical firm and manufactured dynamos and electrical meters based on direct current. and like father like son Albert grew off his father and soon alberts first big thing was his theories on thermodynamic fluctuation in 1905 which is belived that this was the starting of his plans for nuclear weapons.

Their have been many great thinkers throughout history. Albert Einstein is one of the most famous ones, but all great scientist and philosophers owe a great deal to Thales of Miletus. Many have considered him the father of science, but that title is split between Thales and Democritus. Thales was the first person the explain the questions of the universe without mythology and his rejection of mythology was a great influence to the scientific revolution. He was also the first person to use deductive reasoning in geometry and is credited as the first mathematician. Albert Einstein should be grateful to Thales because without him their would be no E=mc2
