October 6: Moulin Rouge

On 6 October 1889 the Moulin Rouge opened its doors in the Jarden de Paris (Garden of Paris). The Moulin Rouge was a cabaret.

Initially, a cabaret was any business that served alcohol. As time went on, however, cabarets started featuring music, stage shows, and—in the case of the Moulin Rouge—the can-can which is a form of dance that featured female dancers and provocative body movements that would manipulate the long skirts worn at the time to look suggestive. The can-can did it turn heads! Of the can-can dancers at the Moulin Rouge, many became famous, including Goulue, Jeanne la Folle, and Nini Pattes-en-l’Air (legs in the air) who went on to open her own French can-can school.

In 1907, Mistinguet first appeared on stage at the Moulin Rouge and over the next 20 years made quite a name for herself. She even toured Europe and the United States. After the Moulin Rouge was destroyed in a fire in 1915 and rebuilt in 1921, Mistinguet was one of the many stars that helped the Moulin Rouge make its comeback. Eventually, she retired in 1921 and the Moulin Rouge was changed into a night club only to make its second come back in 1951 once again featuring acts, dances, and the can-can.

In 2001, Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor starred in Moulin Rouge!, a film following the story of a poet who falls in love with a courtesan at the Moulin Rouge who also happens to be coveted by a duke. In 2012, the cabaret celebrated its 123th birthday and to this day still thrives.

During 1889, the Moulin Rouge was not the only Paris landmark to open. Gustav Eiffel, who had begun his work on the Eiffel Tower two years prior, finally erected his masterpiece which was to be the arch into the 1889 World’s Fair.

I am a student at Schoolcraft College. My interests include music, singing, reading, photography, cooking, traveling, writing, drawing, creating, and believing that anything is possible. A possible career choice I am interested in is going to teach in Japan. If I could go back in time to any period, I would most likely choose the Renaissance so I could explore all the wonders as they were being created.

The 2001 musical Moulin Rouge is a very romantic and passionate film. The tale’s wonderful music portrays the tale of a depressed writer known as Christian, who falls for the lovely courtesan Satine, a star dancer at the Moulin Rouge. After Satine mistakes Christian for the Duke of Monroth, the man she is endowed too. After kissing Chrsitian and inviting him to her room, she realizes that he is not the man she thought he was. By this point, Christian had fallen for the beautiful dancer, played by Nicole Kidman. As their love was forbidden the whole story, the two still always found ways to see each other. As it was apparent that Satine had Tuberculosis from early on in the film, it was foreshadowed that Christian was falling for a women who had not had much time to live. As the story went on, Christian, played by Ewan McGregor, did everything in his power to be with Satine, even though the Duke forbid them from seeing each other. After writing a song confessing his love for Satine, she had become drastically ill. After closing off her last show she collapsed, and had died. The film was nominated for eight academy awards and collected only two, for best costume design and Best Art Direction.
