October 9: Collegiate School of New Haven Founded
On 9 October 1701, Collegiate School was founded. In 1718, the school’s name was changed to Yale University, after Elihu Yale, a wealthy merchant and benefactor of the university. Yale is the third-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. Yale was founded only after Harvard (1636) and The College of William & Mary (1693).
Yale, which is located in New Haven, Connecticut, began when ten ministers met in 1700 with the purpose of founding a college in the Colony of Connecticut. Shortly after, in 1701, New Haven was named the capital of the colony and the Governor and General assembly met and passed “An Act for Liberty to Erect a Collegiate School.”
Nathan Hale who was designated the state hero of Connecticut in 1989 for his patriotic actions while fighting for the Continental Army, attended Yale during the American Revolution. However, Hale was not the only Revolution hero that attended Yale. Militias formed by Yale students fought off the British when they invaded New Haven.
Yale has made many contributions to the development of science and medicine. The first site for studies on chemotherapy was located at Yale when Louis Goodman and Alfred Gilman began clinical trials in 1942. US News ranked Yale third in its National University Rankings and fourth in the world.
