A commercial wrist watch with Mickey Mouse and the NBA are both things that are still with us today .What do they have in common? They both happened this day in history, August 3 rd.

August 3 rd 1949 the National Basketball  League  ( NBL) merged with Basketball Association of America  (BBA) to form the National Basketball Association (NBA) .

Mickey Mouse  was Walt Disney’s favorite character of all time, while the NBA is one of the most premier sports organizations in sports history. They are both recognized icons in America and around the world.the watch has changed and the NBA has evolved but we often see vintage Mickey and recall the great players that came before.

I grew up in Fullerton California which is down the street from Disneyland and the Staples center where the Lakers  play, so I got the privilege to grow up with both. I’m most grateful for both amazing  things happening on the same day.

Walt Disney’s most popular character is no doubt Mickey Mouse. The tale of Mickey Mouse didn’t start as Mickey nor did it even start with a mouse. Disney Brothers was just another branch in the Universal Picture animations and in 1927 Walt Disney created the character “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.” The smiling Oswald blew up and Universal ordered a series of short episodes. In 1928 the rabbit was still on top and Disney met to negotiate a contract. The studio then informed Walt that they hired away all of his employees and retained the rights to Oswald. Universal offered to keep Walt Disney if he accepted a lower salary but he refused. Walt and one loyal animator took Oswald and modified him into what we all know today as the most popular Mickey Mouse. After a few name changes Disney, his wife with no argument, and his co-worker settled on Mickey. Mickey has been through a lot of changes the retired animated mouse is still considered the most famous cultural icons of the 20th and 21st century. Even though Mickey Mouse’s birthday is Nov. 18th, he would be 83 years old today.

Disney World was not making much of a profit by having all their guests stay at the hotels surrounding the park. Disney World today has six on-site Disney resorts where guests can enjoy their stay while visiting Mickey Mouse’s beautiful home. On Walt Disney World opening day in 1971, there were not many on-site Disney hotels. Walt Disney decided to build a park in Florida because of the amount of room around to build his own hotels and restaurants. Disneyland in California was surrounded by a lot of factories and resorts, which disabled Walt from building anything around. Disney World today is a place every child wants to go to. Disney World has changed drastically from its opening day, now the park has attractions for the parents too.

I was very attracted to this post because I love Mickey Mouse and I have watched probably every Walt Disney movie that has ever been created. I also remember watching the cartoons of Mickey Mouse and “The Mickey Mouse Club” on television with my dad when I was younger. Something interesting that I learned was that this lovable mouse was no always named Mickey Mouse. His name was originally Mortimer Mouse, until his wife, Lillian Disney persuaded him to change it.
