October 5: Fast Food Legend Born

On 5 October 1902, a legend was born. Not that his family or friends knew it, but Ray Kroc would forever change the fast-food industry.

When Kroc was younger, his father took him to a phrenologist, which is a person who predicted the person’s future by reading the bumps on their head. Kroc’s chart revealed that his future would be in the food-service industry.

In 1954 Kroc founded a small but very successful restaurant run by two brother named Dick and Mac McDonald in San Bernardino, California. These two brothers had produced a small menu containing very few items such as burgers, fries, and beverages. In 1955 Kroc presented his idea of creating McDonald’s restaurants all over the United States to the brothers. During this the same year, he founded the McDonalds Corporation and 5 years later bought the rights to the McDonalds name. By 1958, McDonalds had sold its 100 millionth hamburger.

In 1961, Kroc started a unique training program for his employees and staff called Hamburger University at a new restaurant in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. There, people were trained in all the methods of running a successful McDonalds. The university also had a research and developmental laboratory where new cooking, freezing, storing, and serving methods were developed. To this day more than 80,000 people have graduated from the program.

Kroc worked in McDonalds until he died on 14 January 1984. Even when he was confined to a wheelchair, he still attended work in the office nearly every day. Ray Kroc’s passion for his work and determination continues to be an inspirational part of McDonalds everywhere.
